The final event of the Innovative Payments Observatory took place on March 13, presenting data on the evolution of digital payments in Italy.
2024 finally marks the year in which digital (43%) surpasses cash (41%)
The total amount of payments reached 481 billion euros, marking an 8.5% growth compared to the previous year and confirming the habit of Italians to use cards even for small amounts (average receipt: €42.5). Payments made via mobile and wearable devices recorded exceptional growth, reaching 47.4 billion euros by the end of the year (+58%). Digital payments are growing more than the European average (+15.6% in Italy versus +7.4% in the EU).
The Politecnico Observatory confirms itself as one of the points of reference in the sector, an opportunity to network, share data and explore issues with the community, discussing together the future of digital payments.
There is only one week left until the hashtag#salonepagamenti!
The second event not to be missed is on November 29 at 10:00 am inside the Agora of the Future: a 10-step path, designed by ABIEventi, to explore the most significant issues in the payments landscape.

The Salone dei Pagamenti 2024 is getting closer and closer!

The location of the event will be the prestigious Allianz MiCo – Milano Convention Centre, the largest congress center in Europe.
Yesterday the conference “Digital Payments in Italy in 2024” was held, organized by the Innovative Payments Observatory of the Politecnico di Milano, now in its sixteenth edition.
What are the results presented?
- Digital payments in Italy reached €223 billion in the first six months of 2024 (+8.6%)
- The number of transactions stood at 5.2 billion (+15.6%)
- The amount of the average receipt decreases considerably, equal to €42.80 (compared to the previous €45.50), a sign of an increasingly frequent use of card payments for small purchases
- Payments made from smartphones or wearable devices are growing both in terms of value transacted (+58%, for a total of 19.9 billion euros) and in number of transactions (over 760 million in 6 months, +68%)
What are the perspectives?
The payment acceptance scenario is changing: in addition to traditional POS, MobilePOS and Smart POS, today we are looking with interest at SoftPOS, solutions capable of transforming any Android and iOS device into a payment terminal.
Another novelty is account to account payments (A2A ), an ever-evolving trend.
In order not to stop this constant growth in the world of electronic payments, the issue of costs remains crucial, which requires a change, in the direction of their reduction and greater transparency.

The growth of pagamenti digitali continues:
Yesterday the Final Conference of Politecnico di Milano was held.
Payments in Italy are increasingly contactless, in fact in 2023 8 out of 10 digital transactions are carried out with cards with tap & go technology or with devices equipped with NFC.
A big boost also to the phenomenon of the Buy Now Pay Later BNPL. In terms of technological innovation in the payment acceptance perimeter, many acquirers have opened up to the first SoftPOS solutions, starting to distribute this type of product to their merchants, either as a stand-alone or alongside the physical POS already installed.
We would like to thank for the stimulating discussion table and the accurate analysis of the data, which provided us with a clear picture of technological trends and market trends.
The conference held in Bari on Thursday 7 and Friday 8 March ended successfully.
The two days counted almost 200 presences, including transport companies, players in the sector, the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport, representatives of the Puglia Region and the academic world.
The topics covered are of absolute importance: AI for planning processes, scheduling, passenger counting, infomobility, ticketing systems, self-driving vehicles, relations with the banking world.
All this is the basis of the entire electronic ticketing system of Bari, which together with MaaS were the protagonists of the event.
N&TS GROUP once again confirms its commitment to offering specialized payment solutions also for Smart Mobility.
