Yesterday the conference “Digital Payments in Italy in 2024” was held, organized by the Innovative Payments Observatory of the Politecnico di Milano, now in its sixteenth edition.
What are the results presented?
- Digital payments in Italy reached €223 billion in the first six months of 2024 (+8.6%)
- The number of transactions stood at 5.2 billion (+15.6%)
- The amount of the average receipt decreases considerably, equal to €42.80 (compared to the previous €45.50), a sign of an increasingly frequent use of card payments for small purchases
- Payments made from smartphones or wearable devices are growing both in terms of value transacted (+58%, for a total of 19.9 billion euros) and in number of transactions (over 760 million in 6 months, +68%)
What are the perspectives?
The payment acceptance scenario is changing: in addition to traditional POS, MobilePOS and Smart POS, today we are looking with interest at SoftPOS, solutions capable of transforming any Android and iOS device into a payment terminal.
Another novelty is account to account payments (A2A ), an ever-evolving trend.
In order not to stop this constant growth in the world of electronic payments, the issue of costs remains crucial, which requires a change, in the direction of their reduction and greater transparency.
